I think we should be doing this for 'Equality Now' since it is an international browncoat endeavour. It makes it feel more like a worldwide event if we are raising funds for the same charity.
From www.cantstoptheserenity.com | Quote: | | We're inviting Browncoats to organize same-day nationwide (and, if it happens, around the world) screenings to be held on June 23, all to benefit Joss' favorite charity -- an event we've therefore dubbed Serenity Now/Equality Now. |

The flyers sound like a good idea. |

We've definately gotta do it for Equality Now. They were the reason that Serenity Day began in the first place - charity screenings to raise money for Equality Now.
In order to get people in, we should do a "Bring a friend" arrangement. If you're a Browncoat and you're going, bring along someone who hasn't seen the movie before. That would instantly double the amount of people going, so we wouldn't have to worry about not filling out a cinema, and convincing a friend or relative to go is a more surefire way than putting up flyers or posters (that's not to say we shouldn't have flyers and posters).
Speaking of flyers and posters, make sure that they say Serenity Day. This shouldn't be just a movie screening, this should be a big event and it should be promoted accordingly.
And finally, I've heard talk about after-screening shindigs on other Serenity forums around the 'Net. Does that sound like something that could be done? If we do bring a whole bunch of noobies to the screening then this'd be perfect for bringing 'em into the Browncoat fold. Hell, the whole day could become a big crash-course into Browncoatism.
Just my two cents. _________________

I very much agree with everyone on Equality now. fine with me.
also, i'm not stepping on their toes, Mim asked if i'd mind doing the ring-around as she's just not getting time to do so
the bring a friend thing is cool - but I personally can't think of any friends of mine that haven't seen serenity - i mean, in melbourne, yes, but up here - almost everyone i know is either a browncoat, or i've bought them a firefly/serenity dvd and MADE them watch it. or they're just sci-fi fans like me and all that, and went and saw it of their own accord - that's why i figured flyers might be good - get's a whole new bunch in that may not have even heard about/known about the movie before, ya know?
and yes. the flyers will definately say SERENITY DAY in big-honkin-letters _________________ "To be a geek means you're passionate about something... and I think that shows our individuality and who we are as humans. Then maybe it doesn't necessarily have to be someone who hasn't seen Serenity yet. If you can bring a FF-noob then excellent, but if you can't then just bring anyone else. The point is that by everyone bringing a friend we instantly double the people going and we can fill out a biggish venue like the George St cinema (there was concern in the other thread about not being able to fill out a proper cinema). _________________

My personal thoughts (everyone can feel free to disregard them) But as far as who we should raise money for, I'm leaning toward a charity that affects us. Equality Now is an awesome charity, but I just think people will be more likely to dig a little deeper into their wallet if the charity is one that could directly affect them.
Equality Now is an American charity and all proceeds go to America. I personally feel we should raise money for a charity that is Australian. Ultimately I don't think it really matters who we are raising money for, the fact that we are supporting both the BDM and a charity is the main thing. _________________ Why did God invent Red heads?

Phleb: I disagree. The UK and other countries are raising money for Equality Now, and raising money for EN is part of the whole Serenity Day thing. Its not that its a local or American or whatever charity, its that its Joss' favourite charity and the one he'd give money to. _________________

Like I said, just my opinion. I still think though that people will be more likely to give to a charity they both know about and one that has a direct affect on them. I'll be supporting either way, but I think a charity that will have an impact on us will be more effective in raising money.
Maybe we could do both, such as money from tickets go to EN and then people can make donations to a charity we choose. _________________ Why did God invent Red heads?

You are correct that the proceeds aren't used to help women in Australia. However, I believe that donations to oxfam (a global charity with an Australian presence) aren't used to help Australians either, but that doesn't stop people from contributing.

Perhaps your suggestion of raising funds for a second charity could be incorporated into the raffle. However, I don't know about the logistics of this. |

Yeah, I think we'd be best to stick with Equality Now. That way we can talk up the "world-wide effort" side of things. Also the idea of this being our birthday present to Joss and that therefore we should be supporting his favourite charity makes sense to me.
Equality now seems to operate in a similar way to Amnesty International and really does have a global focus so I don't think there's be much difficulty "selling" it as an appropriate charity for Aussies to support and it's not like we'll be looking for local business sponsorship or anything like that, the screening itself and the signed poster prizes should give us a big enough drawcard. Also we'll have the opportunity to do something for a close to home group when we do Phleb's trivia night.
Does that make sense? _________________ Mim's Muddle/twitter/Made by Mim |
