I write tonight as the bearer of very sad news.

Our dear friend Chocolate died early this morning at St Vincents Hospital.

Not many people knew just how ill Chocky was and no-body expected him to leave us this quickly. He was diagnosed with lung cancer just one week ago, the last in a series of serious health problems.

A number of us had been intending to visit him in hospital today, taking the shindig to him as it were. It was not to be. Instead tears have been shed, memories shared and glasses raised to a good friend.

Chocky always thought of others ahead of himself. He was always ready to go out of his way to help and protect his friends. He has been an integral part of the Serenity Oz community and will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace Chocolate, dear friend, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Words... cannot express this in any way. My attempts to write something to do Chocky justice come out as cliched rubbish.

So instead, I turn to someone else's words - WH Auden.

Quote:
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Au revoir, my friend.

Looks like you got your wings sooner, my friend.
I truly hope you are there now.

Chocky,
Thank you for everything. I will carry your words of love and encouragement with me always, as I will the brief but precious time we had together.

You wanted the best for me, but without you in my life I will have to settle for less. My only regret is that I never took the opportunity to say the words out loud to you about how I felt, even though you knew, I still should have said it.

You will be sorely missed, my love, and never forgotten.

Linda.

I'm not sure that I can add much, but I wanted to say something...

I remember the first shindig that Chocky attended with the Sydney Browncoats. He had to be coaxed, wheedled and cajoled through a series of the PMs from a whole bunch of us, before he could be persuaded to attend and meet us all in the flesh.

How different to the Papa Bear/Grand Poobah/Daddy of the SOz board Chocky that was greeting everyone as they arrived at the cocktail party at Mim's place during the recent Sydney Ozcoat weekend shindig!?

Chocky loved this board. He loved everyone on it - he saw that we could all be as beautiful, loving, welcoming and accepting as he was. He wanted everyone to reach for their dreams, to reach into the beyond.

I thank you, Chocolate, for all of the lifts home, for the philosophical conversations, for the passionate support you gave me in all my life decisions. I thank you, Chocolate, for everything you brought to this board, for your smile, for your warm welcome to each new member. I thank you, Chocolate, for being part of my life, our lives, for the last year.

I'm going to miss you more than I can tell.

I loved you dearly, and will always carry you with me babe.

Give sorrow words. The grief that does not speak
Whispers the o're-fraught heart, and bids it
break.

Goodbye my friend.

I will always think of Chocolate as the embodiment of what it means to be a browncoat.

I was so embarrassed when I burst into tears upon meeting Joss, yet here was Chocky with tears welling up in his eyes with complete understanding - and I had only met Chocky for the first time the day before!

He was a dear friend to us all and will be greatly missed.

Chocolate, I always saw you as the beating heart of the SOz board. Though I've thought this for a long time, I knew you would never accept it, so I kept it to myself. Not only have you been a friend, guide, protector and leader to us all here, but your compassion, humour, generosity, humility, and open and honest manner have been both inspirational and immensely touching.

You taught me one of the most important lessons I have ever learned: the value of being open and honest with people. I never got the chance to thank you ... but you have changed me profoundly, for the better, and I offer you my eternal love and gratitude for that.

I only wish I'd had more time to get to know you.

Wherever you are now, I hope you're at peace and not too worried about us. You will be missed, every day.

Thank you for the good times.

Love,
Shane

Chocolate,

Though we knew each other for such a short time the gifts you gave me will last for all eternity. Your words gave me strength to strive for the stars, your kindess comforted me when I needed it most. I hope you knew how much you meant to me, to all of us that have been touched by you even if for just a short time.

I will miss you dearly.

All my love,
Felicity

What can I say that has not already been put so eloquently by others?

He will be missed.

A while back, Chocky and I got to talking about people, and how he felt about everyone - the love he had in him. It was beautiful, and I'm so glad he shared that much of himself with me.

I'll miss you Chocky. Even if it was short knowing you, it was something I'll cherish.

I searched for a pic to post, but instead I'm posting a pic of the Japanese Friendship Garden in Sydney, from the Shindig weekend. Here's to you Chocky - I hope you find somewhere peaceful like this.

There are rare people in life who are connected to you, beyond reason, beyond time, beyond anything we can grasp.
Than, you are one of them.
You understood, guided, and protected me, and all you ever gave was love. You showed me that there truly are people who are compassionate, caring and wise. You restored my faith in people. My belief in what's beyond.

I will be forever grateful to have our lives entwined.

Thank you.

You touched so many lives across these boards. And we will always carry your love on with us.

"I like to live in angel time.
To see a look in someone's eye, and freeze it in your mind forever.
A smile on someone's lips and remember it for all times
A word. A quote... And take it as truth for eternity.

...In the end, only love matters"

Keep flying, my dearest Chocky. I'll miss you deeply.

Love,
Glynnis

It's hard when a man who embodies everything that is good about being a browncoat becomes for us our own leaf in the wind.

Everyone deals with grief in their own way. At the moment I feel tears and sadness. I look forward to a time when I can celebrate the life of Chocolate and remember the joy and good humour that he freely shared with everyone.

Rest in Serenity, Chocky.

I think he'll be sorely missed - from what I gathered he seemed an intelligent and sincere individual, a combination which is all too rare.
